The Contemporary Art Group, Incorporated, became an independent not-for-profit organization in 2006.Begun as a special interest group within the Westfield Art Association, the CAG re-defined “contemporary” to mean “alive and currently producing art.”The group is currently affiliated with the WatchungArtsCenter www.watchungarts.org.
The mission of the Contemporary Art Group is to:
Provide a forum for the discussion and exchange of ideas
Share information about the contemporary art world
Offer opportunities for members to show their work and gain recognition
The CAG offers its members opportunities to exhibit their work – in group and solo shows – at different venues throughout the year. To this end, information on members and their work is presented to galleries and art venues in New Jersey. To qualify for exhibits, members must serve on a committee, attend meetings, and help with the shows. Members must also pay annual dues to the Contemporary Art Group.
Our meetings are held at the Watchung Arts Center. Following a discussion of business and upcoming exhibits, we break for refreshments and a chance for informal discussion. After the break there is usually time for a short presentation by a member or guest, a roundtable discussion, or a critique of members’ work. The CAG also hosts receptions, meet-and-greets and a holiday dinner. We enjoy getting to know each other as we become familiar with each other’s artwork.
The Contemporary Art Group is a collegial organization of working artists who meet on a regular basis to advance their art interests. CAG is a supportive group where there is mutual respect among members, where members share ideas, provide information about exhibit opportunities, and describe their own artistic development. CAG is a cooperative in the sense that members share the work of running the organization, coordinating the shows, selecting venues for exhibits, transporting artwork, hanging and advertising shows, and hosting receptions. It is an organization that works because individual members work. CAG is an open organization, accepting as members individuals who share its goals and who are willing and able to help carry out its mission.
The Contemporary Art Group holds monthly meetings at the Watchung Arts Center,
